Dog Age Calculator

About us

Why we built Dog Age Calculator

Dog Age Calculator is an independent, free tool built for one simple reason: the old "1 dog year = 7 human years" rule that most people grew up with just isn't accurate. It ignores how dogs actually age — fast in the first two years, then at a steady rate that depends heavily on their adult size. We wanted a calculator that gets that right.

Our approach

Instead of a flat multiplier, this site's formula is grounded in published veterinary guidance — the first two years come from the American Veterinary Medical Association's (AVMA) published guideline, and the life-stage thresholds (puppy, adolescent, adult, senior, geriatric) follow the AAHA Canine Life Stage Guidelines. Where no single official chart exists — the size-scaled rate after year two — we say so plainly rather than presenting a guess as verified fact. You can see exactly which parts are cited versus estimated on the How it works section of the calculator.

What we value

  • Accuracy over convenience — real research first, simple shortcuts never.
  • No sign-up, no paywall, and no unnecessary data collection to use the calculator.
  • Privacy by default — any photo you upload stays on your own device and is never sent anywhere.
  • Honesty about the limits of a formula — this tool estimates, it doesn't diagnose.

Who's behind it

Dog Age Calculator is run as an independent side project, not a veterinary practice or a pet-care company. It should never replace advice from your dog's actual veterinarian — it's here to give you a better, more honest estimate than "multiply by seven," and to help you understand what life stage your dog is really in.
